License Plate Options

Standard Plates

Below are the two versions of the standard Florida license tag. You can choose either plate for the standard fee or, you can choose a specialty or personalized plate (with exceptions for some types of vehicles) for an additional fee.

Personalized/Vanity License Plates

In Florida, you can personalize the letter and/or number configuration on your license plate. These are often referred to as "vanity plates." Personalized license plates may be issued to most types of vehicles, with some exceptions such as semi-truck tractors, wreckers, and other such specialized vehicles.

A $28.00 plate fee and $15.00 personalization fee is charged, upon initial application, in addition to other registration fees. The $15.00 personalization fee is charged each year upon renewal.

Before making a trip to your local tax collector's office to make your reservation, visit the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles' website to find out if the plate configuration you would like is available.

Specialty Tags

Each of the specialty license plates requires an annual use fee for the special designed plate, above the Florida license plate. The purpose of specialty license plates is to raise funds for a particular cause. The use of a specialty license plate is a voluntary purchase.

 When you renew your registration at the tax collector's office, simply let them know you wish to replace your current license plate with a specialty license plate. If it is not time in your license plate's cycle to replace the metal license plate, you will pay a few additional dollars to switch to a specialty license plate, so the best time to switch is when you're going to have to replace your metal license plate (every ten years).
