The Board of County Commissioners appoints citizens to various boards, committees and authorities which are related to County government activities. Membership on these boards is voluntary and involves no remuneration.

Contact the County Administrator's Office at (352) 540-6249 for a list of vacant positions. The application is available at the link below or at the County Administrator's Office. Serving as a member on one of these boards or committees is an excellent way to become involved in your community and learn more about county government. Below is a listing and brief description of the various boards and committees.

Affordable Housing Advisory Committee

Purpose: The Affordable Housing Advisory Committee is charged to, triennially, review established policies and procedures, ordinances, land development regulations, and adopted local government comprehensive plan and recommend specific actions or initiatives to encourage or facilitate affordable housing while protection the ability of the property to appreciate in value. The recommendations may include the modification or repeal of existing policies, procedures, ordinances, regulations, or plan provisions; the creation of exceptions applicable to affordable housing; or the adoption of new policies, procedures, regulations, ordinances, or plan provisions, including recommendations to amend the comprehensive plan and corresponding regulations, ordinances, and other policies.

Board of Construction and Regulation

Purpose: Conducts informal hearings involving contractor licensing regulations, conducts hearings for appeals of decisions and interpretations of the building official, and serves as the county-wide compliance review board to hear appeals as to technical amendments of the Hernando County Construction Code.

Citizens Advisory Task Force for the Small Cities Community Development Block Grant Program

Purpose: The purpose of the CDBG Citizens Advisory Task Force is to encourage community members and residents, particularly low- and moderate-income persons who reside in blighted areas of the County, to provide input relative to all phases of the project process. The members will also assist local government staff and/or consultant in overseeing the project, including development of plans, procedures, public hearings, and amendments, if necessary. The positions are open for residents of Hernando County who are interested in providing input relative to all phases of the Community Development Block Grant application and process.

Economic Development & Airport Technical Advisory Committee

Purpose: The Economic Development Technical Advisory Committee shall act in an advisory capacity to the Countyโ€™s economic development staff regarding the Economic Development Program.  The committee shall provide input, feedback and assistance on economic development issues such as strategic planning, goal setting, prioritization, policies, programming, investments, and incentives.

Fine Arts Council

Purpose: Supports groups associated with the arts; sponsors the annual Art in the Park Festival.

Library Advisory Committee

Purpose: Acts as a liaison between the public and the BOCC on matters relating to the Library System

Planning and Zoning Commission

Purpose: Acts as an advisory board to the BOCC with regard to re-zonings and other land use issues.

Tourist Development Council

Purpose: To prepare a plan for tourist development to include a projection of the tax revenues and develop a prioritized list of proposed uses for the revenue
