Some are locally acquired, virus passed to a person or animal by a mosquito here at home. The virus cannot be spread to other people or animals.

Diseases that are typically imported:

Person gets the virus from a mosquito while traveling outside the US and brings the virus back home with them. These can become locally transmitted if a local mosquito takes a blood meal from a person who has the active virus, then later bites someone else:
