MSBU Solid Waste Disposal Assessment

The solid waste disposal assessment is a non-ad valorem assessment billed annually since 1991 to all residential homeowners in Hernando County. This assessment is the method of generating revenue to cover costs for the construction, operation and maintenance of the solid waste system which is comprised of the Croom Landfill (closed), The Northwest Waste Management Landfill (open), the West Hernando Convenience Center (open), the East Hernando Convenience Center (open), the Household Hazardous Waste program, the Waste Tire program and the Recycling program. 

Solid Waste Disposal assessment rate

The current rate for 2024 is $94.91 for single-family units and $85.78 per unit for multi-family units.  This rate was approved in 2023 and will appear on the 2023 tax bill.  This rate is subject to change.

Interim Solid Waste Assessment Ordinance

The Interim Solid Waste Assessment Ordinance (#99-17) became effective September 1, 1999. The ordinance establishes the solid waste disposal assessment is due and payable on all new residential units for the interim between construction, completion and placement of the assessment on the property tax bill. The assessment will be prorated and the amount depends upon the month the certificate of occupancy is issued.

Invoices

The MSBU Solid Waste Disposal Assessment invoices are issued for a pro-rated amount for all new construction homes completed after the issuance of the annual tax bills.  If you received a MSBU Solid Waste Disposal Assessment invoice (the account number begins with β€œIA” and the words on the invoice are green) and want to pay, please use one of the following four payment options:

The solid waste assessment is levied against the parcel and is subject to penalties and lien activities if the assessment is unpaid.
